ROCK THE SPINE: THE REVERSAL OF THE GNARLY-HEADED COMPUTER HUNCHBACK
By: Janet Egerer

March 2, 2018, marked day one of my families Spring Holiday. As many of us know it takes some time to detach from work and attach to “doing nothing.” Naturally, that very evening I took notice of a table of 20 people, 18 of whom were slouching severely. Logically, I thought, ‘Wow this would make an interesting blog for PYP.’ The only two people that appeared to have a strong erect spine were a statuesque woman wearing a “rock the spine” chiropractic care t-shirt, and a very fit man sitting next to her who I assume was her husband, #gorgeousposture!

In today’s world we live in what I like to quantify as ‘INation,’ hand-held electronics, laptops, desk tops, smart phones, gaming systems… Evolution and technology has allowed for cessation of movement and a deterioration of vital strength and replaced it with speed and efficiency. We are no longer moving as we were designed and our overall biomechanical function is more in tune with inaction than it is with action. There is now a continued rise in the trend of obesity, a deterioration of musculature and a rise in disease. Our culture is now fraught with what in the fitness industry is known as Kyphosis, or excessive curvature of the thoracic spine causing neck and back pain, you may know this better as, hunchback. With even more need to ‘get the job done’ sedentary life is our now norm, sitting at a desk, checking emails, designing websites, making sure our SEO’s are just right, keeping up with social media, you get the idea. These self-put-upon pressures have taken our upright and mobile society to a pain stricken and obese world.

So how is this relevant and why the hell am I reading this? Does any of the above ring true to you? Because PYP can help. Many of these postural deviations can be reversed with attention. The PYP team are huge proponents of, ‘we move this way now, so we can move this way later.’ We want to give you a digital detox, a turn around on your T-spine, a step back in to mobility and functional movement. We know that the intervertebral discs make up 25% of our spines length. The more we sit, as we age, the less we move, the more decrease we see in our spinal column length. Maintaining a fluid, hydrated and healthy spine requires movement, so maintaining a healthy exercise prescription is critical to our vitality. Look to explore some type of yoga practice if you find that you are constantly seated and huddled over your device. Yoga provides, the meditation and mindfulness we all so very need in our ever-demanding lives, along with the strengthening and stretching that is essential in our physical well-being. Perhaps consider taking Pilates Reformer, for lengthening and strengthening the limbs, stabilizing your core strength and reproducing a powerful and strong posture. TRX and the suspension trainer is another superb modality that gives the body all the right tools to strengthen, stabilize, mobilize and integrate balance with options for both high impact and low impact movement should you choose.

Take notice if your fingers are the most mobile part of your body from all of your typing, if so, then we encourage you to consider exploring alternative ways to move. Reverse the degeneration of your spine and increase your overall body and mind power with mindful, functional and biomechanically safe movement at PYP. Move more, sit less, breathe more and be free of stress.

A doable at home exercise tip…

Lay flat on your stomach, extend your arms over your head like superman, take a deep breath in as you exhale engage your core and lift your limbs off of the floor as you keep your gaze on the floor
Repeat 15 times two times through

peace, love and fun! We look forward to sharing our passion for yoga with your child this
summer!

A little about the kids yoga teachers at PYP:
Marlena Vendemia – I worked in the corporate fitness setting before earning my M.S. in Exercise
Physiology from The Pennsylvania State University. After a career in sales, I became a stay-at home
mom to my two children who are now 3 and 5 years old. In 2015, I earned my 200-hour
registered yoga teacher certification. I was drawn to pursue this certification due to the benefits
of peace, calm and strength that I experienced through my own yoga practice. In addition to
teaching adult yoga classes at The PYP Studio, I currently hold a position at Penn State as a
fitness instructor working with pregnant women as part of the Healthy Moms Research Study. I
have also been sharing the benefits of yoga to children grades K-6 as part of an after school
program for the 2015-2016 school year. My goal is to bring classes filled with truth, authenticity,
love and fun to the community!! I have all of the clearances required by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education to teach to children, and have also completed the Penn State
mandatory reporting training course as part of my employment requirements for the university. I
am ready to share yoga and have fun with you and your children!!
Heather Yablonski – When I was asked if I wanted to teach kids yoga this summer, my heart was
so happy! Before I became a yoga teacher I worked at the YMCA in Torrance California as a
childcare teacher. I spent my mornings and afternoons with kindergarteners and enjoyed my
summers hosting summer camp adventures. In 2009, I moved to State College searching for
my place in the community, I started working at Starbucks and connected with some wonderful
people in this town. Kerry Bestwick was one of them. I started taking her yoga classes and fell in
love with how it made me feel! Yoga became my passion and I knew I had to share it with
everyone! Needless to say, I completed my 200hr YTT in 2013. PYP offered me a place on their
team and the rest is history. In 2015, I directed the Friends school preschool summer camp and
toward the end of the summer I found out I was pregnant. I’ve always enjoyed looking at life
through the eyes of a child and 15 months ago my husband and I were blessed with our little
girl. Being able to introduce yoga to her at such a young age is a true gift and now being able to
bring it to the PYP community, well it’s just the beginning.

Sunday November 22nd, 18 teams, consisting of four riders each, will embark on a super special cycling journey. We will ride in honor of our fallen heroes in a charity cycle event honoring Special Operations Warrior Foundation. We are asking our teams to donate $200 to participate in the ride, but certainly encourage more if they are up for the challenge! These funds can be given straight from the riders or they can look to get sponsorships from, friends, family or local business. With such a an overwhelmingly huge success from last year, having raised over $10,000, we could not resist the opportunity to give back to this outstanding charity again!
Special Operations Warrior Foundations’ mission is as follows:
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation ensures full financial assistance for a post-secondary degree from an accredited two or four-year college, university, technical, or trade school; and offers family and educational counseling, including in-home tutoring, to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation also provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded and hospitalized special operations personnel.

All riders will receive a Pedalthon T-shirt for their participation. Prizes are given for top dollar raised by a team and individual, top wattage produced from a team and individual rider and more! We have local sponsors on board for post ride delicious food and coffee and in house instructors assisting in a post ride stretch. In addition we have a live DJ sponsored by Nittany Entertainment for our Pedalthon Jam fest!

The support from the PYP community far surpassed our expectations last year. We along with the volunteers at SOWF, are so grateful for the abundance of generosity shown and look forward to another successful year!

He is recognized as a creator of Power Yoga, and is the founder of Santa Monica Power Yoga, based in Santa Monica, California.  He has led yoga classes, retreats and workshops worldwide, and has been credited with pioneering the practice of donation-based yoga in the United States.
